As the Executive Director of a faith-based nonprofit that exists to share and help meet the needs of local ministries serving our disenfranchised neighbors, many heart breaking needs come across my desk.  None as shocking as a recent needs list item sent to me by Debra McCammon, Executive Director of the Hospitality House of Huntsville –  welcomes & supports families of inmates for visitations and executions.

The item description:
TV with DVD player built in –  to be used by children to do exercise videos on
weekends, and also, to watch children’s shows during execution day to help distract the
children from what is happening around them.

Few things are able to interrupt me while I’m hyper-focused on a last minute deadline.  As I read over this request, God breathed into my spirit, “this breaks my heart”.  I re-read what I was re-typing.  What I experienced was immediate and profound grief.

“Lord, what can I do?”.

“Stop”.

Moved with compassion and an intense need to spend time with our Father, I closed my laptop and listened as He poured into me.  Realization: the work of the Get Togethers is where we have the opportunity to BLESS GOD BACK.  We are able to care for God’s own heart.  It’s easy to get pulled into the “work” of sharing and meeting ministry needs.  But what breaks the heart of our God?

This:
TV with DVD player built in – to be used by children to do exercise videos on
weekends, and also, to watch children’s shows during execution day to help distract the
children from what is happening around them.

At our January NetCaring™ Lunch, I was so thankful that when this need was expressed, Kiara Johnson, an employee from our other partner ministry, Buckner Aldine Family Hope Center, humbly raised her hand to meet this need.  She blessed God’s heart.

Get Together Northwest’s own Danielle Trent, offered to pick up the television with a built-in dvd player and drive it to Huntsville to deliver to Ms. McCammon.  She also blessed God’s heart.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring the good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes; a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.” – Isaiah 61:1-3
